Litchie
Welcome, Litchi, to Danes in Distress!
With the spirit of Thanksgiving in mind DiD stepped out of our provincial policy to pull a Dane from a shelter in Quebec at their request. Litchi found herself in a shelter after she was seized due to neglect. She’s 2 years old and was a money maker for an unscrupulous breeder. Litchi has many mammary tumors and we’re praying that when she sees one of our vets we’re told that the tumors are not cancerous. She’s very, very thin.
So why did a shelter from Quebec reach out to us and why did we agree to take her? The truth is heartbreaking but here it is: Litchi would have been euthanized because:
Euthanizing for medical costs and/or lack of space is not something we like to think about. Before we raise our torches and pitchforks let’s do some simple math: surrenders + dumped dogs + strays = more dogs than space. Rescues are pulling as many dogs as they can, but they too need foster homes and funds to operate. It’s a horrible situation with no relief in sight.
Back to Litchi….
Despite her first 2 years experience with people this girl is a gem. She craves human companionship and absorbs confidence from other dogs. It turns out that she’s pretty good with cats and kids as well.
